Virtual Therapy Across Virginia & West Virginia

Specialized in Adults Who Grew Up Too Fast

Therapy that Provides Tools & Structure

You learned to need less and give more after growing up with a parent who couldn't show up.

When a caregiver can’t fully show up, you learn to read the room, keep the peace, hold everything together so that everyone around you can just get through the day. You grew up fast, but now you’re an adult who is exhausted, overwhelmed, and honestly a little angry. I don’t blame you.

Maybe your caregiver was struggling with mental health or addiction. Maybe there was abuse. Maybe there were a lot of kids and not enough parent to go around. Whatever it looked like, you probably told yourself it wasn’t that bad or that other people had it worse. Maybe you even say “I turned out fine.” And maybe you did, but fine and free are two very different things.

You don’t need a dramatic story to be here. You just need to be ready to step into who you are and prioritize yourself.

Why Work With Heather?

Asking for help is an act of love. It's saying, "I believe I am worth taking care of." - Heather Rainey, LCSW

I’m not going to tell you I offer a safe space and leave it at that. Every therapist says that. What I can tell you is that I know what it feels like to keep giving everything you have to everyone around you while quietly running on empty. I’ve lived that. It’s part of why this work matters so much to me and why I’m not just someone who studied trauma in a textbook. I understand it from the inside out.

What makes me different is that I treat all of you, not just your thoughts. My background isn’t a straight line, from culinary school, to teaching yoga, to six years of trauma work with incarcerated individuals followed by over five years of prevention work with high school students, to now working with you, every piece informs how I sit with clients.

I use EMDR as my primary tool because I’ve watched it create changes that still stop me in my tracks. I’m direct, I’m warm, and I’m going to work just as hard as you do. I’ll never push you somewhere you’re not ready to go. But I will absolutely get in the trenches with you until we find resolve.

My Therapy Approach

How Therapy Works

step 1

Face It

We start with what’s happening right now. The anxiety, the anger, the patterns you can’t explain. We look at it together, without judgment and without rushing.

step 2

Trace it

Then we ask the harder question. Why do you do the things you do? We trace it back to where it actually started, because understanding the root cause is what enables change.

step 3

Replace it

We build something new. New skills, new responses, a new understanding of what you’re actually worth. You don’t leave with just insight. You leave with a full toolbox.

Frequently Asked Questions

Adults (18 & older) who grew up being the responsible one. The peacekeeper. The one who read the room before they even walked through the door. If you were cooking meals, managing emotions, raising siblings, or holding your parent together while nobody was holding you, then you already know exactly what I'm talking about.

This is really specific work. Not general trauma, not a little bit of everything. I work with people whose childhoods were shaped by a parent who couldn't show up — addiction, mental illness, abuse, neglect, divorce, all of it. You learned to need less, give more, and never ask for help. And now those same patterns are running your adult life and you can't figure out why you can't just be okay.

I work with all adults, all genders. And I'll be honest, I really want more men in here. I know how hard it is to reach out when you've spent your whole life being told that needing help means something is wrong with you. It doesn't. It means you're finally done carrying it alone.

If any of this sounds like you, you're in the right place.

Yes! I am in network with Aetna, Anthem, and Kaiser Permanente.

If I'm not in network with your insurance plan, you may still be able to use your out-of-network benefits. I'm happy to provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

Every insurance plan is different, so I recommend contacting your insurance provider before your first appointment to understand your deductible, copay, and mental health benefits. If you have questions about the process, I'm happy to help however I can.

If you're using insurance, your cost will depend on your individual plan and benefits.

If you prefer to pay privately, individual therapy sessions are $185 for a 60-minute appointment. Your first appointment is an intake evaluation, which is $200. During this session, we'll take the time to explore your history, better understand what's bringing you to therapy, and create a plan that feels aligned with your goals.

If I'm out of network with your insurance plan, I can also provide a superbill for you to submit for potential reimbursement.

Yes. Free 15 minute consultations are available.

A consultation is a chance to ask questions and see if this feels like a supportive fit for you before committing to therapy.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. I know that sounds like a mouthful. The simple version is that it's one of the most researched trauma therapies that exists, and it works differently than traditional talk therapy. Instead of just talking about what happened, we actually help your brain finish processing it so it stops running your life in the background.

And no, it is not about reliving your trauma. You are never thrown into the deep end. We build trust and safety first, always. EMDR doesn't even come into the picture until you're ready, and when it does, you are in control the entire time. As a clinician, it’s powerful to witness someone who once believed they were ‘broken’ begin to reprocess unresolved trauma, experience relief, and reconnect with a sense of joy.

You're not. I want to be really clear about that. I've sat with people carrying decades of compounded pain — childhood trauma, loss, anger that had taken over their entire life — and watched them come out the other side completely different. Different posture, different relationships, different sense of who they are. That doesn't happen overnight and I won't pretend it does. But it happens. The only thing that determines whether therapy works is whether you're willing to show up and do the work. I'll be right there doing it with you.

That's one of the most common things I hear. When you grow up in a home where you don't talk about what's happening, keeping secrets becomes second nature. You learned early that what happened in your house stayed in your house. So the idea of sitting down and saying it out loud to someone feels impossible or even disloyal.

Here's what I know. The really magical work happens when people finally feel safe enough to say the thing they thought they'd take to the grave. We don't rush to get there. We build that safety first, always. And when you're ready, you'll know.

I hear this a lot. And it's worth asking: was it the wrong therapist, the wrong approach, or the wrong timing? Sometimes it's all three. The therapeutic relationship matters more than almost anything else, and you don't know if it's a fit until you're in it.

One of my clients told me after a couple months of work: "I think I like you better than my regular therapist." That's not me bragging, that's just a reminder that fit matters. Give it a real shot before you write off the whole thing.

All sessions are virtual.

Virtual therapy allows clients and families to receive consistent care without the added stress of travel, location barriers, or scheduling challenges. You can work with me from Virgina & West Virginia

Therapy is not a life sentence. You can come for a season, work on something specific, feel ready to pause and go live your life. That's a win. Come back if life gets lifey again. Either way, I'll be here.

What I will say is that the deeper work takes time, and I'd rather be honest with you about that than promise a quick fix. The patterns you're carrying didn't develop overnight and they won't dissolve in six sessions. But you're also not signing up forever. You come with your goals, we do the work, and when you feel ready to go do life with your full toolbox, that's exactly what I want for you.

Lets talk about you.

The first step is just saying yes to yourself.

The first step is simple. Fill out the contact form to request a free 15-minute consult and we will take it from there. You don’t have to have it figured out before you reach out.
